History of the Twin Lakes Sailing Association (TLSA)
The Twin Lakes Sailing Association, or TLSA, was founded in 1974 by Hiram Walker, Ted Bodensteiner, Dale & Bobbie Johnson and Bill Gibb. Just to make sure it got off to a good start, they formed a dealership to purchase 40 Sunfish Sailboats to be sold at cost to friends and neighbors. They were the number one Sunfish distributor in the world in 1974. Some of those original boats are still on Twin Lakes, having changed hands over the years.
The first documented sailing race of the Twin Lakes Sailing Association (TLSA) was held on May 26, 1975. The TLSA started out with two classes of sailboats. The primary class was the Sunfish. The other class was the “Open Class” which was open to all other sailboat styles and models. Final race results for the Open Class had to be handicapped to determine the winners. Over the years, the TLSA has supported other classes of boats including the Force Five, Sweet 16 and its newest class, the Hobie Wave.

It’s Not Just For Sailors!
The Twin Lakes Sailing Association (TLSA) is much more than a group of sailors running in circles every other Sunday in the Summer. In fact, if it wasn’t for a rich history the group would be better named the Twin Lakes “Social” Association. The TLSA is about getting together for food and refreshments, meeting old friends and creating new ones. There is no better way to meet your neighbors at the Lake than by becoming a Social member of the Twin Lakes Sailing Association.
Family Social Membership – $40.00 Per Year
A social membership to the Twin Lakes Sailing Association includes every member of the family, and even the occasional guests are welcome to attend as well. There are usually THIRTEEN social events each year to participate in:
- Season Kick-Off Party: Potluck Grill-Out and Live Music
- Season Opener Breakfast Party
- Memorial Day Poker Run & Pizza Party
- Six Sailing Day PreGlow & AfterGlow Social Mixers
- Traditions Wine Mixer Sailing Event & Social Dinner Event (Ladies Only)
- Two Sailboat Scramble Events & Potluck Social Grill-Outs
- Year-End Banquet Celebration
Sailing Membership – $20.00 Per Year
A sailing membership is an additional fee added to the cost of a social membership for those wishing to participate in the six sailing races hosted each season. The sailing fee is per boat, substitutes are not required to pay the fee. The Sailing Membership covers the costs of the prizes given out after each racing event.
There are currently two divisions for the Hobie Waves, a Racing Division for the more experienced racers and a Social Division for beginners and those still advancing in the ranks. The winner of the Social Division is moved into the Racing Division each season.
